What is erectile dysfunction?

Learn more about the symptoms and causes of erectile dysfunction, how it can affect your life and how to treat it.

What is erectile dysfunction and what are the symptoms?

If you have erectile dysfunction (ED) you may not be able to get an erection firm enough for the duration of sex or even to commence sexual activities.

It may be an occasional problem or a more regular issue that you struggle with, either way it is likely to have an emotional impact on both you and your partner. It’s a condition affecting many men and it can impact your quality of life, your relationships and your mental health.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

There are many potential causes of ED. It can be a result of existing health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases (such as hypertension or heart disease), hormonal problems, injury or damage to the penis, depression, anxiety, or a combination of these factors. The likelihood of ED increases with age. It is important to have a check-up with your doctor to ensure that your ED is not caused by another serious health condition.

ED may also be a side effect of some common medications, such as antihypertensives, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants and antacids.

With our busy lifestyles it can be hard to prioritise wellbeing, which can have a knock-on effect when it comes to our physical and mental health. ED can be linked to our lifestyle, exercise choices and weight, as well as the stresses associated with our hectic lives.

Performance anxiety, heightened by increased societal pressures and the rise of social media, has led to men feeling increased expectations and pressure, resulting in ED. It’s easy to fall into a vicious cycle of anxiety that can worsen ED and make you want to avoid sex altogether.

Who experiences erectile dysfunction?

One thing is for certain – if you have ED, you’re not alone. Many men all over the world have ED. In fact, one in two men over 40 experiences ED worldwide 1.

This number is on the rise due to many reasons, including changes in lifestyles including diets, an ageing population and an increase in diabetes. It is predicted more than 320 million men worldwide will experience ED by 2025.2

You can have ED at any age. But the statistics clearly show that the likelihood you’ll have ED increases with age.2 Nevertheless, men with ED are getting younger with the condition increasingly affecting men under 40.3

How does erectile dysfunction make you feel?

If you have ED, you may feel frustrated, upset, lacking in self-confidence or feel alone, which can put a burden on your everyday life.

Because ED is an intimate problem that can cause some people embarrassment, it often goes untreated, even though it’s a very common condition.

What’s more ED can take the fun and spontaneity out of your sex life. This can have a negative effect on you and your partner, putting a strain on your relationship.

Seeking support and treatment can break this cycle and help you and your partner revitalise your sex life.

How can you treat erectile dysfunction?

The good news is that there are treatments available to help you to overcome ED, by restoring your ability to have and maintain an erection. Ultimately, the goal of treatment is to improve your and your partner’s quality of life with minimal side effects.

There are a number of treatments for ED currently available including traditional pills and the new alternative, Eroxon®, a gel applied directly to the penis. Oral medications have long been the go-to therapy for ED and are effective, but do not always meet the needs of many men and their partners 4

Currently, one in two men stop their oral medication for ED within one year of commencing treatment 5. The use of on-demand oral ED medications requires a level of pre-planning  as you may have to wait up to an hour or more for the pill to begin working. Oral medications are also unsuitable for men taking certain medicines such as nitrates 6.

Eroxon® is clinically proven to effectively treat ED fast, helping men  get an erection within 10 minutes, bringing back the fun and intimacy that couples really want. So you are ready to make love when you want to.

It has a rapid effect because, instead of having to work through your entire bloodstream, as ED pills do, Eroxon® is a gel applied locally. You or your partner can apply it directly to the head of the penis. This also means that Eroxon® has a very low level of side effects and has no known drug interactions.

Eroxon® is available without prescription and you can easily buy Eroxon® at the pharmacy or online.

How does your partner feel?

ED can put a real strain on your relationship with your partner. Partners can feel helpless and frustrated because they want to help find a solution and be more involved.

If you’re in a relationship with someone with ED and want to learn more about how you can support them with Eroxon®, read our page for partners.
